No Place to Hide in a Toxic World
Environmental toxic substances. The issue is so large and confusing, we just want to turn our backs on it. But if we retreat into denial, we may also miss available ways to protect ourselves and our loved ones.
It's no fun to hear bad news - but our best hope to deal with any difficult issue is to take it on. And there are things we can do. Explore what we’ve gathered on environmental toxicity - but also discover some direct first steps you can take to deal with it.
Environmental Toxins : Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones
There may be nowhere to hide in a toxic world - but you can fight back !
Environmental Toxins and Children
Environmental Toxic Substances : What Every Parent Should Know
Environmental Causes of Learning Disabilities and Childhood Neurological Disorders
Teen Girls' Body Burden of Hormone-Altering Cosmetics Chemicals
ADD, ADHD, allergies, asthma, autism, childhood cancers. Take a moment to count how many kids you know, or know of, with any of these conditions.
Now think back to when you were growing up, and how many people you knew then with such illnesses. For most of us, it’s a great many fewer.
As medical professionals who work with children, we expect to see illness - but even for us, the prevalence is remarkable. Why do we see so much chronic illness at such an early age ? Kids who can’t stop moving - kids who're constantly tired ? Why are these children having such an incredibly hard time ?
These links hint where some of these issues may be coming from – and why they’re arising ever earlier in childhood.
Surge in Chronic Toxicity Related Illnesses
Over 85% of Americans now reach age 65 with at least one chronic illness. Over 50% have two or more such illnesses, and are on an average of six to eight prescription medications. Consider the fact that :
- Almost one in four deaths in America is caused by cancer.
- Almost a third of all deaths in the U.S. are caused by a
heart attack or stroke.
- Diabetes affects one in five Americans over age 65.
- More than 10% of Americans who reach age 65
have Alzheimers disease.
- Three in five Americans over age 65 suffer from arthritis
Environmental toxins are a common factor in all these illnesses – and in almost every chronic degenerative disease we face.

The Surge in Autoimmune Illnesses Linked to Environmental Toxins
Insidious Nature and Effects of Toxins
- Besides the sheer number and volume of toxins we’re exposed to, it may also take only a small amount to do harm. As many medicines require only a tiny dose to be therapeutic, toxins may need just a tiny dose amount to make us sick.
- When a variety of toxins are absorbed, they also often work together synergistically. The toxic whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.
- Toxins absorbed into an overburdened body may accumulate silently, giving rise only much later to illness. The onset of these illnesses may be entirely sudden, unexpected – and devastating.
Accidents, Spills, Illicit Dumping
Environmental Disasters and Their Effects on Human Beings
Let’s begin to consider some sources of environmental toxic exposure. While the above may include some of the more serious documented releases of toxins release into our environment, if the toxins issue were an iceberg, reported events would be little more than small birds fluttering on its tip.
Toxic Exposure : 24/7 !
Sensational as they may be, headlines shouldn’t fool us concerning toxin exposure. It’s not about isolated incidents – it’s continuous. Consider how toxins approach us :
In our food : Pesticides in Our Foods ; see also : 12 Dangerous Food Additives
In our water : Wikipedia Review : Water Pollution. See especially the first various
Sources of Water Pollution, beginning with the section on Agriculture.
In our air : Wikipedia Review : Air Pollution See especially : Pollutants ; and : Indoor Air Quality(IAQ) ; and Effects on Children
On our farms : Risks from Chemical Use on the Farm
Agricultural Chemicals : Risks and Remedies
In the buildings where we live and work : Sick Building Syndrome
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) in Your Home
Four Ways to Decrease VOCs in Your Home
Toxins in Our Jobs and Professions
These are just a first few examples :
Nurse's Health
Toxic Teacher Syndrome
Mercury Exposure and the Dentist
And lest we forget – we can also bring toxins home with us :
Workplace Toxins Can Kill at Home
If you have more toxin-related occupational illness articles, please let us know about them.
Warfare and Environmental Toxins
Nowhere does technology race further ahead of due diligence than in the realm of weapons and warfare :
Agent Orange
Depleted Uranium : Here, There and Everywhere
Panel Concludes Chemicals Caused Gulf War Illnesses
Bear in mind that the panel on Gulf War illnesses didn’t even consider such factors as depleted uranium exposure and exposure to smoke from weapons and oil well fires – fires which burned for months with troops in close proximity. Also bear in mind that :
- Of the 2401 nuclear devices detonated by all nations between 1945 and 1992, 527 were detonated aboveground, with a yield equal to 479,191 tons of TNT.
- Besides releasing radiation, every nuclear device - every depleted uranium missile, bomb, shell or round, is also a source of environmental heavy metals.
- All military explosives and the fires they produce, spread heavy metals and toxins that may persist in the environment for decades.
Fight Back !
Environmental toxins are implicated in 75% of all cancers and 95% of serious illnesses overall. They’re not “the crisis in our future” – they’re a source of illness and death on a large scale, worldwide, in the present.
Unnoticed as they may be, environmental toxins are a potent threat to our human race. To fight back means to defend our wellness, but also to build it robustly - to value our lives and health, and to be proactive about them. In this crisis, to fight back also means to engage socially and work together with others.
In this spirit, have a look at these links and attachments - reflect on them, build a personal plan, and by all means, fight back against environmental toxic substances !
