Environmental toxins are a large scale, worldwide issue; and like any problem long unattended, their consequences are increasing. This should concern everyone - but especially people :
- Reaching middle age and their retirement years
- Whose health is already in some way impaired
- In their child bearing years, or who are grandparents
Public awareness of this issue is probably about where it was for global warming fifteen years ago. But ignorance is not safety. The consequences are happening now. How can we get beyond worry and helplessness, and take real action ?
First, we can become informed concerning environmental toxins, and learn basic self protective measures. We can also identify organizations working for greater awareness and safety concerning these substances. Two more organizations robust in environmental toxin advocacy are Organic Consumers Association and Children's Health Defense.
The business of government, as described in the Bill of Rights and elsewhere in the U.S. Constitution, is to protect basic civil and human rights and freedoms ; and to reduce the incidence in society of behaviors that cause people injury, harm and loss. Unfortunately, governments don't always live up to their duties - and when they don't, it falls to citizens to remind them, by every peaceful means possible. This is what we mean by the term activism - and these groups are activist in the very best sense. Lastly, we encourage you to speak up and be part of the political process. Basically, politics is about rights – about agreements we make for mutual protection, safety and wellbeing. Environmental toxins issues falls squarely in this category.
Politicians need to know what we think – otherwise they can’t really represent us. Present the facts as you understand them, and make your concerns clear. Be calm, keep it simple - and without fail, be respectful.
