The Book Thief
By Markus Zusak
The story unfolds in a poor neighborhood on the outskirts of Munich, in Germany in the Nazi time. The main cast are a 10 year old (at the beginning) girl ; her best friend (a boy) ; her foster father and mother ; and a young Jew the family comes to hide in their basement. Something of the nature of a fable, The Book Thief bends and creates language in its own unique way to share a story so small and so grand, so rebellious and
tender, so funny and so heart breakingly human, that only Death could tell it. This could be on a list, if there was one, of "basic books for human beings" ; one everyone might do well to read in our times - especially young people struggling toward adulthood. I'll let less words be more here : this is a book worth reading !
