Anton Bruckner : Symphony No 7 in E Major
Composed between 1881 and 1883, with revisions in 1885. First performed in Leipzig, Germany in 1884 ; this performance was by the Concertgebouworkest Orchestra, directed by Mariss Jansons in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on Christmas Day 2012. The Symphony is in four movements :
Movement 1 : Allegro moderato. E major
Movement 2 : Adagio. C Sharp Minor
Movement 3 : Scherzo. A minor with Trio in F major
Movement 4 : Finale. E major
My first experience of Bruckner's 7th was around 1980, in the music rooms at the library of San Francisco State University. It was Fall, and I'd go in the very late afternoon, as day slowly became evening. The sun shone brilliantly through the windy cypresses outside, filling the room with a majestic orange light ; and between wind, light and music, the time was magical.
