Environmental Toxic Substances
Environmental Toxins : Personal Entry Points
My first real awareness of environmental toxins came in 1963, when I read the book "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson. It made quite a strong impression on me, already as a new teenager. My actual exposures to toxic substances, however, began already much earlier. I was raised in a home where both parents smoked, and I vividly remember the clouds of smoke there, in the car, in restaurants and at parties my parents would give. I had chronic bronchitis for years, and eventually, a suppressed immune system that was considered even life threatening. I also remember "the polio years", and running with other kids behind trucks billowing dense blue-grey smoke in summer - the chemical DDT, favored at the time to kill mosquitos thought to carry the disease. Later I lived for six years at a lake that had dense overgrowths of seaweed in summertime. Again the answer was chemicals - this time herbicides, and I swam in this all summer without a care, every summer for years.
My awareness of toxins, and of ways to avoid and/or detoxify from them, grew more conscious in 2001, when a friend brought the issue - and the need and possibility to detoxify - vividly to my attention. By now a registered nurse, I began to reseach and write and gather the resources you see below. If you're not yet familiar with this issue, I recommend that you make a start here.
